Remember the boy with the bike? His name is Chan. He has been to our house approximately 3,500 times since Grant fixed his bike yesterday. He also has brought his brother, Quay. They are both 13 years old. Quay told me today that he got expelled 3 times last year. They hang out with Robbie. (Remember him?)
Tonight after handing out flyers for Saturday’s event, The 4 Hinson’s sat on the couch and took a deep breath. The day was done, everyone was gone, our kids were ready for bed.
Suddenly there was a loud knock at the door. Grant went to answer it and was bombarded with 4 kids…Robbie, Chan, Quay, & Robbie’s cute little sister Jenna. They could hardly speak through their emotions. Some kids in the neighborhood were trying to start something with them and they were angry. BUT PRAISE JESUS instead of acting in their anger as they have their whole entire lives, they came to our house to ASK US TO PRAY WITH THEM. With chill bumps on my skin, tears in my eyes, a smile on my face and a pounding heart, I listened to my husband pray with these boys in our kitchen. When Grant said “amen” we both looked at each other like “What just happened?!”
He moves in hearts in ways we don’t understand.
We have come to see more and more clearly while living here that God really meets people exactly where they are. We haven’t displayed some great big, in depth gospel presentation to these kids. They know we love them because we love Jesus. They know that Jesus loves them, too, because we tell them. And they know in order to fight the anger and the rage that rises up in their hearts, they must run to Jesus.
They hung around after the prayer. Sweet little Jenna sat and played with Evan Grace’s toys. The boys built towers with blocks.
Each night we have a family worship time where we pray, read a chapter of the Bible, and sing four songs. It was getting late and our kids needed to go to bed, so we invited Robbie, Quay, Chan & Jenna to stick around while we did our thing. They were so respectful the whole time.
When we finished, Chan said “See, I told you they was good people!” To which our response was, “Chan, we are only good people because Jesus is in our hearts and we love Him so very much. And He loves you, too.”
Oh Sweet Jesus, show them how much you love them! As they are laying in their beds tonight replay in their minds the words that were prayed, read, and sung here.
When we finally were able to lay our kids in bed I laid with them and Grant told a story. The story was about our four new friends and how one day they would invite Jesus into their hearts. With tears welling up in my eyes I could see it happen. I know it will happen. This place will be changed one life at a time.
