“About Asher he said:
‘Most blessed of sons is Asher;
let him be favored by his brothers,
and let him bathe his feet in oil.
The bolts of your gates will be iron and bronze,
and your strength will equal your days.'”
Deuteronomy 33:24, 25
In 2007 I saw Beth Moore speak in Boone, North Carolina. I don’t know if I will ever forget the impact her words had on my life. For some reason I really tuned into what God spoke through her at that conference.
Grant and I were to be married a few months later and I was in the middle of planning the wedding. I was also finishing up nursing school. It was a stressful time in my life, maybe I was seeking a fresh Word from The Lord.
The first night she introduced her scripture and explained that she would break it down over the next day’s sessions. It was going to be about one of the 12 tribes of Israel. One of Jacob’s sons. Asher.
Asher: happy, blessed
Moses blesses each Tribe of Israel in Deuteronomy 33.
“About Asher he said: ‘Most blessed of sons is Asher; let him be favored by his brothers, and let him bathe his feet in oil.The bolts of your gates will be iron and bronze, and your strength will equal your days.'”
As Beth unpacked the scripture for us, I felt impressed on my heart that this would be the name of my son one day. The blessing of Asher is one to pray for those you love. It is one to pray for yourself. It is a strong and powerful message tucked into Deuteronomy that brings about blessings, favor, prosperity, strength and longevity. Everything I want in a child that God blesses me with.
“Most blessed of sons is Asher; let him be favored by his brothers…”
Moses was blessing Asher first with favor of those around him. He was praying for great relationships, an agreeable attitude, and to get along well with others. To find favor with those in his life.
“…and let him bathe his feet in oil.”
The next request was that he would be prosperous. The area where the tribe was located had olive trees. This meant that not only would he have enough olive oil from his crop to sell and use as necessary, he would also have it in abundance–to use to bathe his own feet. This prosperity would be shared with those around him in service to his brothers.
“The bolts of your gates will be iron and bronze…”
Moses blessed Asher with inner strength. The gates represent his inner resolve. The inner strength. Iron and bronze are two of the strongest metals. The bolts of the gates are what holds the gate together. If the bolts of the gates are made of strong metals, they will be unshakeable. They will be unbreakable. No matter what life throws his way, the inner strength will remain…he won’t be shaken.
“…and your strength will equal your days.”
Finally, Asher was blessed with longevity in life. With strength up until his last day. With a life full until the end.
What a blessing for our firstborn child. A son. Asher Luke.
Asher turns 4 years old today. His life has changed ours. He is inviting–always asking our friends to stay and eat supper with us. He is brilliant–always asking how something is spelled or telling us things he learns. He is tender-hearted–always sorrowful if he does wrong. He is loving–always willing to give a hug or a kiss. He is protective–always taking care of his little sister. He is adventurous–always climbing, exploring, and inventing.
May God allow us many, many more years with our Asher. We want to see the fruit of the blessing in his life. We want to see him find favor with people, become prosperous, display inner strength, and live life to its fullest.
Sweet boy Asher, this blessing has been prayed for you in the womb, the night you were born, when you were sick, and when you were well. This is what we claim for you. As you grow and learn more about our loving Father, may you claim it for yourself as well. May you pray it for your children and your friends. Today as you turn 4 may you know that you have been a true joy in our lives. You have made life sweeter. You are a special child of God and you will change the world. We know it. We see it in you. And we look forward to walking with you and watching God reveal His plans for your life.
Happy Birthday Asher Luke!
