About Asher he said:

“Most blessed of sons is Asher;
    let him be favored by his brothers,
    and let him bathe his feet in oil.
The bolts of your gates will be iron and bronze,
    and your strength will equal your days.” Deuteronomy 33:24-25

As much as I can’t believe it, it’s time to admit that you are 5 years old today. I remember what I was doing 5 years ago this moment. My emotions were tied up somewhere between giddy excitement and nervous nausea. I would be a Mommy for the first time and no matter how prepared I had tried to be, I felt so very unprepared. I remembered wondering if this is how Mary felt when she was carrying the Savior of the world.

Asher Basher, you have been one of the greatest sources of happiness for me as your Mommy. We named you Asher because it means blessed & happy. You certainly fit your name and you cause those around you to be blessed & happy. You bring joy through your kindness and love towards people.

You’ve never been one to snuggle very much, but you love to have one-on-one conversations. Your favorite topic right now is Heaven. You ask questions about what Heaven will be like and your sweet prayers for others always include “and I hope when they die they will go to Heaven.” Sometimes when you pray you sound so mature that I peek one eye open to watch you because I can’t believe it’s actually my little boy.

Your ability to love all people has taught me so much. You play with children who aren’t the nicest and you have compassion on those who no one else does. You seem so grown up in the way you display God’s Love toward others. You are a remarkable boy.

The intelligence you display is something that baffles me. I jokingly say you get it from me, but I realize that you are far smarter than I. Aside from the words you can spell and read and the math problems you delight in solving, you have a maturity about you that is rare. When neighbors come over they all are surprised you are not older. The ways you can hold a conversation and speak intelligent things are crazy. I know–without any doubt in my mind–that you are going to use that to serve God. Pairing your intellect with your heart for others is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen and I can’t wait to watch God do miraculous things through you, Luke Duke.

Right now you can ride your bike like a rocket, eat us out of house & home, memorize scripture like no other, and still suck your thumb when you are tired. Your Daddy-O is your best friend and you love doing boy stuff. You try to speak Spanish whenever you can and your favorite restaurant is the Chinese place. Your creativity shines when you draw and cut and color and tape, creating crowns and capes and towers. When we told you that you would get three things for Christmas, one thing that is consistently on your list is a Bible.

Buddy, I cannot put into words how proud I am of you. You are compassionate and favored. You are flourishing and tough. You are strong and mature. I am the one who is blessed and happy.

Love you more than I can say,

Mommy
